The Market Development Grant (MDG) Unit is a unit established at MATRADE for the purpose of assisting SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises) to undertake activities for the development of export market. As such, the SME definition must be clear so that companies that are eligible can apply through the set up procedures.
SME is defined as any company which is incorporated under the company Act 1965 (Sdn Bhd) with at least 60% of the company’s equity is held by Malaysian. For the purpose of MDG, SME is categorized into two industries, namely manufacturing and agricultural industry and trading industry. For the Manufacturing and Agricultural industry, companies must have an annual sales turnover not exceeding RM25 million or fulltime employees of not more than 150. While for the Trading industry, companies must have an annual sales not exceeding RM5 million or fulltime employees of not more than 50 and exporting made in Malaysia products.
Therefore, interested SMEs for MDG scheme must be involved in manufacturing, trading or agriculture industries besides meeting the above SME criteria. There are 11 activities eligible for this grant as follows:
- Participation in International Trade Fair.
- Participation in Trade and Investment Mission & Specialized Marketing Mission.
- Participation in In-Store Promotion (Overseas).
- Participation in Industry and Professional Related International Conferences (Overseas).
- Participation in meetings related to negotiation on Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), Free Trade Agreement (FTA), ASEAN, World Trade Organization (WTO), APEC and other market access negotiations by representatives of Trade and Industry Associations and Professional Bodies.
- Printing of promotional Materials.
- Initial cost of setting up representative office (Overseas).
- Promotional activities undertaken with Hypermarkets and Retail Stores (Overseas).
- Conducting Export Market Research.
- Participation in Malaysia Export Exhibition Centre, MATRADE.
- Participation in local Export Training Seminars and Workshops.
Successful SMEs for MDG are eligible to claim certain expenses. A list of these claimable expenses (only for MIHAS participants) is attached for references.
